Gracious Word: Dérive

6/7/2014

Derive
Word every Gracious Individual should know: Dérive

Definition: Dérive (pronounced: de-‘rEv); French; noun
1. A spontaneous journey where the traveller leaves their life behind for a time to let the spirit of the landscape and architecture attract and move them.

Why I love this word:
What a truly wonderful word. I think many of us may think of this from time to time. When we are struggling with our realities, wondering why we are working a 9-5 job, or simply dreaming of an escape, this word is a dream not many of us get to live. Especially for an artist, imaging having a creative block, if you could just drop everything for a few days, weeks, or even a month and go travel the world for a bit of inspiration. Think about the art you could create, photograph, or write about when you experience one of the greatest pleasures in the world; traveling.
