This word is most commonly used in citations to indicate an author or work that has just been mentioned. So next time you are citing an essay for class, and you used multiple examples from the same author, you may use this word. For example,
If the first citation is :

and the immediate following citation is the same author and title but a different cited page it would be shown as...
Idem, p. 267.
