Definition: Saudade (pronounced: 'sau-“da-dE); Portuguese; noun
1. A nostalgic longing to be near again to something or someone that is distant, or that has been loved and then lost; 'the love that remains.'
Why I love this word:
Long distance relationships are, as you already know, difficult. When you are away from this person, the only thing you can really do to feel connected with them, besides conversing on a consistent basis, is to romanticize what life would be like if you were together. Your text and phone conversations take on a new life when you form that longing feeling to be with each other. But after some time, these visualizations become fairytale wishes and life hits you that these fantasies are not real. You decide it's probably not best to continue forward with a love that could only exist in your dreams, but your feelings for them don't subside as easily. It's the trials of love. Though you are not together, saudade is about the love that remains.
