Gracious Word: Ailurophilia

4/14/2014

Ailurophilia
Word every Gracious Individual should know: Ailurophilia

Definition:
Ailurophilia (pronounced (ahy-loor-uh-FIL-ee-uh); Greek; noun
1. A liking for cats, as by cat fanciers.

Why I love this word:
Can I just begin by saying how amazingly excited I am to have found a word that directly describes the act of loving a cat. And the root of this word is GREEK! Ailurophilia combines the Greek aílouro meaning “cat” with -philia meaning “affection, affinity.” In modern usage, -philia is most often used in the formation of compound words that have a general sense “unnatural attraction” or “tendency.”
