Definition: Ameliorate; (Pronounced: uh-meel-yuh-reyt) Latin; verb
1. To make or become better; improve
Why I love this word:
The usage of Ameliorate is often wrongly used where alleviate is meant. Ameliorate is properly used to mean 'improve,' not 'make easier to bear,' so one should talk about alleviating pain or hardship, not ameliorating it. Ameliorate is to step in and to make a situation better. You could try introducing a second lollipop to ameliorate a battle between two four-year-olds over a single lollipop.
