Gracious Words: Honne and Tatemae

6/29/2014

honne and tatemae
Words every Gracious Individual should know: Honee and Tatemae

Definitions: Honne and Tatemae; Japanese
1. Honne and tatemae describe the contrast between a person's true feelings and desires (honne) and the behavior and opinions one displays in public (tatemae)

Why I love this word:
Honne and Tatemae are two very important terms to understand the behavior of Japanese individuals within their society. Honne is defined as ones true desires, opinions and thoughts; while Tatemae refers to how the social obligations and the opinions of each individual adapt to the society in general. It is the “face” that a Japanese person shows in public.
